How One Wellness Director Chose the Total Brain Health Program

By Barbara Peck

An Interview: Theresa Perry of Acts Retirement-Life Communities shares how she decided on the Total Brain Health program for the group of senior communities where she works.

As corporate director of wellness services, Theresa Perry oversees wellness activities in all 23 of the Acts Retirement-Life Communities, which house more than 9,700 seniors in nine states. Acts provides a wide range of extra services for residents, including brain training through the Total Brain Health Toolkits—a series of “out of the box” courses on memory improvement and brain fitness specially designed for active aging and fitness settings.

For Theresa, who’s based in Charlotte, NC, choosing the TBH Toolkits for Acts was, if you’ll excuse the expression, a no-brainer. We talked with her about how she made that choice, and how TBH has been received in her communities.

Q: What got you started on the path to the Total Brain Health programs?

A: About three years ago we decided we needed a wellness culture for our company. We settled on the idea of “Body, Mind and Spirit”—three of the six dimensions of wellness. We felt we’d stick with those three, as we understood them well. And we felt strongly about offering residents some kind of brain program. As we age, probably the No. 1 concern is how we can prevent ourselves from getting some form of dementia.

Q: What research did you do?

A: First, I consulted with the engagement and fitness staff at our communities to find out what we were doing and not doing, and looked into studies by the International Council on Active Aging. Then I reached out to Dr. Cynthia Green [a leading brain health expert and founder of Total Brain Health] to learn more about her work.

Q: What was it that drew you to TBH?

A: The program matched our wellness goals. Like us, Dr. Green looks at body, mind and spirit. At Acts, we care about our bodies, so we practice the fitness end of things. We also want to stimulate our brains. And as a Christian-based company, we have the spiritual side of things too.

To me, it was very important that Dr. Green’s program is science-based. It’s also socially engaging, and that fit with what we were looking for. When you just use a computer program, you’re missing the social aspect. We need to engage our residents; we don’t want them isolated.

Q: What do you like about being a TBH client?

A: It’s the personal touch. Dr. Green did the training herself, conducting four one-hour classes to bring everyone up to speed on the toolkits. Most of our staff received the training, and we also invited residents. We recorded the sessions so we could offer them later for those who got interested in training.

Every month we have a call with Dr. Green as well. When someone on our staff expresses a concern, she’ll make an adjustment. In fact, she encourages us to reach out and let her know of any issues.

Q: Any tips for success with the TBH program?

A:We get our residents to help teach the sessions. Acts COO Charles Coxson suggested it, thinking it would be something they’d enjoy. The program is easy enough to teach—it’s all laid out for you, so you just have to read through it and become familiar with it. Plus, our staff is always there as support. Last year we had eight residents teaching the classes. Most of them are former teachers, and it really gives them a purpose. Isn’t that what we all want?

We’ve found that both our staff and our residents have gotten very engaged with the TBH program. After all, no one wants to get dementia. If we can help our people learn new techniques to maintain memory, that’s an awesome thing.

Building Community with Total Brain Health

Building Community with Total Brain Health:

An Indiana Center Signs On

By Barbara Peck

An Interview: Leah Boas of Mill Race Center speaks about how she helped to select Total Brain Health for the Indiana community center where she works.

Leah Boas is the Aging Well Director at Mill Race Center, a thriving community center for active adults over 50, located in Mill Race Park in Columbus, Indiana. Among other offerings, the center provides a range of health and fitness programs, including the Total Brain Health Toolkits: a series of “out of the box” courses on memory improvement and brain fitness. The TBH Toolkits are specially designed to help adults 50+ adapt, focus and concentrate on cognitive training in a group environment.

Q: Tell us about the center, Leah.

A: We have about 2,200 members from around the area, and we strive to meet their holistic wellness needs. All of our programming is based on the Six Dimensions of Wellness model. Basically, we want to engage our members and make sure they’re aging well.

Q: Where does brain health fit in?

A: Brain health was already a popular subject here even before we started offering TBH. We’d scheduled a few presentations on the subject, and members showed a lot of interest. Plus, we’d seen studies showing that brain health is one of the top concerns of our population.

Q: What excites you about brain training?

A: There’s always new information coming in about the benefits of brain training, and how everybody can use it to boost their recall, and improve cognitive functions in general.

Q: How did you select TBH for Mill Race Center?

A: A group of us had the opportunity to meet Dr. Cynthia Green, a leading brain health expert and founder of Total Brain Health] when she spoke at a conference at the center. Our members really enjoyed her presentation, and asked if we could provide more of what she spoke about. That started our involvement with TBH.

Q: What makes the TBH Toolkits different from other programs?

A: I enjoy the way the TBH program provides evidence about how the memory strategy works, and then teaches you how to use the strategy. I also like the myth-busting aspect—there’s a lot of information out there about memory and brain health, and it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. But TBH has done the research to show why this program works, so people can navigate between what actually is beneficial and what’s just being marketed as beneficial.

I also like that there are multiple levels. Members who’ve taken the first-level course can follow through to the next level.

Finally, since we emphasize social wellness at the center, having a brain health program that brings people together in groups is really beneficial. After all, building community is our role.

Q: What’s it like to be a client of TBH?

A: They’re very supportive and accessible. Whenever we need clarification about a topic, or advice on implementing a toolkit, it’s so easy to get information from them. They even do conference calls, which helps promote a sense of community among those who are leading the classes. Plus, they’re really good at keeping information up to date.

Q: Did anything surprise you about the TBH Toolkits?

A: I hadn’t expected them to be so thorough and user-friendly. Everything you need is laid out step by step, along with the information to support it. There’s no guesswork.

Q: Can you offer any tips for helping the TBH program succeed?

A: When we first offered TBH, we were overwhelmed by the number of people who wanted to participate. To keep the momentum going, we make the program consistently available. This month we’re offering a Level 1 course, a Level 2 course and the Brain Workout course. We provide a continuum as people move through it, but make sure Level 1 is always available for newcomers.

Making Brain Health a Wellness Priority

An Interview with Vi’s Jolene Moore About Total Brain Health

By Barbara Peck

An Interview: Jolene Moore of Vi senior living communities details what she’s learned about implementing the Total Brain Health Toolkits, a series of “out of the box” courses on memory improvement and brain fitness.

As Corporate Director of Lifestyles, Jolene Moore works with Lifestyle Directors at the 10 Vi senior living communities, all of which are using the Total Brain Health (TBH) Memory 1.0 Toolkit. Jolene is based in the Chicago corporate office; the Vi (pronounced “Vee”) communities are located in six states, with almost 4,000 residents.

Q: How did you choose TBH for the Vi communities?

A: I’m constantly looking at industry trends to see where programming is going in senior living. Three years ago I started seeing more about brain health in the news. That told me it was something I wanted to bring to our communities—to educate our residents about dementia and Alzheimer’s.

We were already doing really well with intellectual programming, but our lineup was missing science-based programs. I researched “brain health programs” and found that there are many ways to interpret this topic. I was intrigued by TBH from the beginning, so I talked to Dr. Green [the leading brain health expert who founded Total Brain Health] and attended her sessions at conferences. I liked that she uses evidence from previously proven strategies to help users learn the science behind the toolkits, and the reasons for implementing the program. I also liked the structure: the training and the toolkits support the science in a very logical manner.

I contacted some other TBH clients and learned that the program had been well accepted in their communities. Finally, I got buy-in from our corporate office to purchase the program.

Q: How does TBH fit your strategic goals?

A: In 2016 I rolled out our wellness philosophy, “Living Well: Mind, Body and Spirit.” To get residents to embrace it, I wanted to offer evidence-based programs in each of the three areas—mind, body and spirit. That was essential to stimulate and engage our residents, who are very sophisticated and well educated. And from my research, I knew that TBH addresses whole-person wellness, which was exactly what I was looking for.

Q: How did you roll out the TBH Toolkit in your communities?

A: I chose one of our communities to do a pilot because I knew that the team there would be very open-minded about a new type of classroom program, and would put a sincere effort into making it successful. Later, they were my advocates when it came to rolling out to the rest of the communities. The pilot instructor was always available to offer advice and strategies in implementing the program.

In introducing the TBH program, I made it clear that I wasn’t promising to improve everyone’s brain health. But, I told them, this program will inspire you to attend to your brain health: To be aware, to think about ways you can prolong your brain health, and to engage with one another in the memory strategies you’re learning.

Q: What was your experience of the training process?

A: It was tricky to ask my team to do something they hadn’t done before. Teaching in a classroom setting isn’t everyone’s desire or talent—my team members excel at working with residents, but that doesn’t mean they have the desire to teach a class based on science. But Dr. Green was there to support me all the way. She led the training calls, and whenever my team had questions, they could discuss it over the phone with her.

We especially liked having our fitness coordinators act as TBH trainers. They’re used to teaching and being in front of people, so they’re more comfortable with that than our lifestyle directors might be. Besides, they totally get the connection between brain health and exercise. They’re cross-selling TBH in their fitness classes—and also cross-selling fitness in their TBH classes!

Q: What do you like about being a TBH client?

A: When I roll out a program for my team, I want to put them in the best possible position for success. I don’t want my team to fail, because if they fail, I fail. The TBH team seems to feel the same way. They don’t want my team to fail at rolling out their program, so they’ll do whatever’s necessary to put us in a win-win position.

Q: How have your residents received the program?

A: As I said, this type of program is new to Vi. We’ve led discussion groups, brought in lecturers, and formed relationships with universities for learning opportunities, but we’d never had this type of structured classroom social learning, week after week. So it was very new for our residents, but they really enjoyed learning and engaging in a different way. They told us that it was not only a great experience, it was also fun!

Total Brain Health Announces  “30 Days To Faster Thinking” Campaign To Kick Off 2018Montclair NJ – December 27, 2017. Total Brain Health is happy to announce its 6th annual “30 Days to Better Brain Health” challenge.  The 2018 campaign, “30 Days to Faster Thinking,” will offer folks of all ages the chance to kick off the new year by revving up their brain speed.

The brain’s speed of thinking is one of the cognitive skills most taxed by aging. Research supports that challenging ourselves to work against the clock can benefit our overall daily thinking. One recent study suggested that such training may even lower dementia risk and preserve independence as we age. “We believe that poor recall is often not a “forgetting problem” but rather a “getting” problem,” explains TBH President and Founder, Cynthia R. Green Ph.D.  “We need to continually improve our attention and focus in order to think quickly and boost retention,” says Dr. Green.

As a leading provider of brain wellness training, Total Brain Health serves thousands of clients through their TBH Toolkits brain training programs, currently used in over 100 active aging and fitness settings across the U.S. and Australia. Total Brain Health’s mission is to empower individuals to take charge of their brain fitness in order to enjoy independence and vitality. “We believe strongly in giving back to our community in ways that can support purposeful aging.  Now in it’s 6th year, our annual “30 Days” campaign is a great opportunity for us to help folks of all ages learn what they can do to stay brain healthy,” says Melissa Engel, TBH COO.
